CTA transformed this petite Second Empire home from a series of small rooms to an open and stylistically minimal home. The narrow entry stair hall is eliminated with the removal of the structural wall, and the narrow stair visually lightened with a new minimal rail. In the Living Spaces, the south elevation opens to the yard with floor to ceiling windows, and a floating wood stove replaces the traditional masonry fireplace, connecting the main living spaces into one. Infrastructure restraints meant the kitchen stayed in its original location, but spare cabinet detailing emphasizes the minimal aesthetic. A sliding glass door provides separation to the office. The Primary Bath is rendered in a monochromatic palate of white marble and powder coated fixtures, but one concession to color is the ground floor powder room, where an existing floor and wall of black and blue glass tiles was retained.
