Newton Kitchen

Newton, MA

The homeowner of this classic but compact 1920s foursquare house lived with a very inefficient kitchen for 10 years before engaging CTA to come up with a new design.  The front entry location had to stay, but CTA started by enlarging the door to the dining area, effectively doubling the perceived size of the room and accommodating more people.  The other major shift was the location of the back entry; shifting the bathroom toward the driveway allowed space for a functional U-shaped workspace and peninsula, creating a separation between work and seating that hadn’t existed before.  Adding a third window over the sink and the enlarged door to the dining area let in much more natural light throughout the day.  The walnut veneer cabinets are modern, but reference the stained oak throughout the craftsman style house, while the handmade mid-century style pulls echo the owner’s existing 1960s furniture collection.
