The Barn, part of the Great Camp compound, feels like its been on the property for generations, but is new to the site as part of the compound design. Since the owner wanted an actual antique barn, not a new one, Catherine collaborated with a barn restoration specialist to help source an antique barn frame that worked with the owners needs for size and configuration. An extensive search throughout the Northeast eventually led to a large rambling barn in Western Pennsylvania, that had at its core a gorgeous early 19th century barn frame, and had been expanded during the later 19th century with an addition, which provided both the main timber frame and additional material for repairs, the loft structure, and the exterior siding. The deceptively simple arrangement with one story facing the field, two stories facing the wood, and the stepped access from the stone lined drive, is actually the result of careful manipulation of the topography of the site to provide both an open party space to the field and a garage and storage space underneath. Inside accommodates the wide open party and play space, a woodshop, TV loft, and a small three level, three bedroom caretaker apartment. The project was designed and managed by Catherine while at Ann Beha Architects.
