The kitchen in the top floor duplex in Boston’s Back Bay faced south and was flooded with daylight from two windows and skylights, but the layout was not particularly efficient, and it was cut off from the rest of the apartment. CTA reconfigured the L shaped kitchen, added a mud room, reclaimed unused space under the eaves, and opened the kitchen to the rest of the apartment, allowing natural light to filter into the center of the home. The new layout was carefully designed to be both functional and beautiful, provide space for children to interact while being out from underfoot, and more than doubling the storage and counter space of the kitchen. Custom cabinetry in a combination of walnut veneer and paint grade pick up materials and colors used elsewhere in the apartment, and the centerpiece walnut storage element is designed to be both highly functional and the focal point of the kitchen.
