Classic Townhouse

Boston, MA

Located in Boston’s historic Beacon Hill, this classic townhouse represents CTA’s more traditional design work. The house had been converted into three apartments, and a new owner sought to restore the building to a single-family home and recreate the classic elegance of the early 19th century exterior. The most dramatic space—a two story library with double height bay window—occupies the former staff wing. The formal parlor level was enhanced with period detailing, new fireplace surrounds, and flame mahogany doors; the graceful curved staircase was stabilized and extended to the lower levels. The basement level was excavated to create additional storage and mechanical space as well as a spa and studio. The main family living space was moved to the second floor, rather than the traditional ground level, to take advantage of high ceilings and abundant natural light. A spacious master suite occupies the third floor, with a study and guest bedroom on the top level. The exterior renovation was subject to detail review by the Historic Commission, who approved the new double glazed, curved sash, true divided light windows with new interior shutters, as well as other restoration of the exterior. New mechanical, lighting, AV, security systems, and a 6-stop elevator were also included in the renovation.
